Keep the rewrite panel open: every sentence comes out the way you want
Pick a format once and it applies to every sentence. With Auto replace on, it keeps working when you close the panel: per sentence pastes at each pause; whole-piece waits for Done.
What it is for
Three common uses.
Always translate before pasting
Translate between languages while you dictate. The direction is picked for you: Chinese, Japanese or Korean becomes English, and English becomes Chinese.
Think out loud, get tidy text
Use Organize. It is fine to ramble: the point comes first, repeats and abandoned versions are dropped, and every fact you mentioned stays.
The report is due Thursday.

・Then make the charts
Use your own format
Write a format of your own, such as a weekly report or the tone of your customer replies, and tell the AI how to write it. From then on it comes out the way you want.

How it works
Five steps.
Open the rewrite panel
After you dictate something, click “✦ Rewrite” next to the overlay. Or go to Settings → Home and turn on “Keep the rewrite panel open”, and the panel appears.
“✦ Rewrite” stays for about 4 seconds after a paste. Press it before you have dictated anything and it opens an empty panel, ready for your next sentence.
Home
Pick a format
Press a format (or its number key) to highlight it; every sentence then goes through it. Press the highlighted format again to show only: the panel shows what you said and rewrites nothing; Auto replace, Replace and Again are greyed out.
Built-in formats: 1 Tone, 2 Organize, 3 Translate, 4 Meeting notes, 5 Email.
Adjust the tone (optional)
Tone is the default format, controlled by the Warmth and Formality sliders. You can leave them as they are.
Turn on “Auto replace”
Per sentence (Tone, Organize, Translate) rewrites and pastes at every pause. Whole (Meeting notes, Email, and custom formats by default) collects captions without pasting while you speak; press Done to paste the whole piece at once. Only the rewrite is pasted.
Change each format in AI rewrite → Rewrite formats → When to process.

With “Auto replace” off
What you said is pasted first. You review the result in the panel and click “Replace” (Enter) to swap out the text you just pasted, or “Again” (⌘R) for another version.
Not happy with a replacement? Press ⌘Z to undo it.

Good to know
A few things to keep in mind.
- The format still works with the panel closed× or Esc turns Keep the rewrite panel open off; with Auto replace on, the chosen format keeps working. The recording pill shows a green “✦ Organize” tag beside “Continuous”; click it to open the panel, change the format or turn Auto replace off. Your choice survives restarts.
- Meeting notes never invent detailsA topic line and bullets of what you said; decisions, to-dos, times, people, owners and deadlines appear only if you said them. No format adds details you did not say.
- The panel stays after “Replace”It follows your next sentence, so there is nothing to reopen.
- It needs an AI serviceNo key yet? See Get a free Gemini API key. Without an AI service there is no rewrite panel, and tone hints still show on the overlay. If the AI service stops working, the panel closes and the switch turns off.
- Each app remembers its formatEach app remembers the format you used last, so it is already picked the next time you speak there.

Make a format of your own
In AI rewrite → Rewrite formats, click Add format, name it and describe how to write. Set When to process to Per sentence or Whole (the default for your formats). No format adds details you did not say.
You can edit the built-in formats too, and click “Restore default” any time to bring them back.
